Arts
2 Semesters:
36 Units
Third Grade Language Arts integrates reading, writing, and oral/visual
communication. Students develop skills to decode words and build
vocabulary. They use dictionaries, context clues, prefixes,
suffixes, and root words. They read informational and literary
texts and make a visit to the library. Students develop skills
in distinguishing fact and opinion, comparison and contrast,
and sequence of events. Using the writing process, they write
sentences, letters, and paragraphs. Students continue to build the skill of cursive writing.
Math
2 Semesters:
36 Units
In this course students use place value to read, write, represent and compare whole numbers and decimals; compute with whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers and decimals; and demonstrate fluency in multiplication facts and corresponding division facts through 10. Students analyze and solve multi-step
problems, count money and make change using coins and dollars
up through ten dollars, and develop common references for
units of measure, and tell time to the nearest minute. In
the geometry standard, students classify, sketch, and describe
attributes of two-dimensional figures, intersecting, parallel,
and perpendicular lines; identify and model three-dimensional
figures; and investigate rotational symmetry and transformations.
Students develop patterns and relationships using objects,
pictures, tables, and variables to solve and explain mathematical
statements and make predictions; engage in surveys and experiments
for data gathering, organization, and analysis; and identify,
describe, and predict simple probability and outcomes through
physical models, pictures, diagrams, and lists.
Social Studies - Communities
2 Semesters: 36 Units
In this course, students will learn that the local community serves as the focal point for third
grade as students begin to understand how their community has changed over time and to make
comparisons with communities in other places. The study of local history comes alive through
the use of artifacts and documents. They also learn how communities are governed and how the
local economy is organized.
Science
2 Semesters:
36 Units
Required Course Materials
The scientific skills of observation, measuring and classification
serve as focal points for the third grade. Students learn
to read and interpret simple tables and graphs, conduct safe
investigations in which they collect and analyze data, and
communicate the results. Third-graders explore the properties
and composition of rocks and soils and the interaction of
forces and motion. They also compare the life cycles of animals,
classifications of animals according to their characteristics,
descriptions of their habitat and adaptations to their environment.
Students examine results of technology and explore careers
in science, as well as scientific contributions from a diversity
of cultures.
