Sharon Doty graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education (1970) and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education (1980). In both degrees, she has a concentration in Mathematics. More recently, she has added two additional teaching certifications, Computer Science through Ashland University (1996) and Vocational Business Information Systems through Kent State University (2002).

Sharon is currently the Mathematics and Technology Specialist for the Virtual Learning Academy. In her previous teaching assignment, Sharon taught in the Union Local School System for 36 years (1969–2004). While there, she taught Grade 5, Grades 7 & 8 Mathematics, High School Mathematics, and High School Technology Classes. During the last five years at Union Local, she helped establish and taught two Tech Prep Programs - Interactive Media and Programming. At the very beginning of her teaching career, Sharon taught mathematics briefly at Piney Fork Elementary (1969), a school that was once part of the Buckeye Local System.

Sharon has received several honors throughout her career: Ohio Technology Teacher of the Year Finalist (2003), National Board Teacher Certification, Early Adolescent Generalist (1999), OCTM Eastern District Mathematics Teacher of the Year (1991), and Martha Jennings Scholar (1986).

Sharon is a life-long learner and enjoys learning new things. Some of her professional development activities include participating in the following: Hidden Uses of the Graphing Calculator (2007), Adobe Higher Ed Leadership Forum (2005, 2007), Ohio Arts Council Summer Media Institute (2002, 2003), Teaching America About Accomplished Teachers (2000), and The Ohio State’s Project Discovery Institute (1993). Other activities include reviewing the Ohio Board of Regents ITQ Grants (2002, 2005), facilitating National Board Candidates (2001, 2002), achieving MOUS Certification Master Level (2000), and achieving Certified Novell Administrator Networking Certification (2001).

Sharon ’s general duties for the Virtual Learning Academy include writing and enhancing the mathematics curriculum; advising and supporting innovative technology enhancements and endeavors; and providing instruction for the Summer Technology Workshops for teachers.
